About                                                      Hello~ Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my website today. My name is Kellie Doyle Bailey. I’m a 30+ year veteran speech pathologist, a mindfulness & social emotional learning specialist, children’s author and the mom of 2 amazing adult children who were and continue to be my best “Life Teachers” on this journey I’ve been on for over 50 years.  In 2019, I wrote a book called Some Days I Flip My Lid~ Learning to Be A Calm Cool Kid. It is loosely based upon my youngest child’s “reactive learning” patterns as a result of birth trauma he suffered as an infant during delivery. Little did I know then, that the gift my son would give to me with each of the developmental milestones that he required help achieving and the challenges that he would face~ would ultimately be my greatest joy and heartache. He  was a tremendous Lid Flipper ~ his little body and sensory system often wasn’t equipped to deal with all that life brought his way. Understanding how to help him changed me as a mother and a clinician. I’m so grateful. Years later, I would study and learn from some of the most amazing teachers in brain-based, neuro-development and become a “Brain-Greek” with my desire to learn more about reactive and responsive brain patterns in children. I didn’t have much of a plan for that book aside from one day getting it illustrated by my daughter when she finished her art education degree and taking it with me to my classrooms to help other children learn how to be “Calm & Cool”, but God and The Universe had other plans ~ as often is the case and it found it’s way into the hands of a publishing company and sold over 20,000 copies in the first 10 months of being released. This one book has been used by so many across the world to teach children and adults how to be Calm Cool Kids using mindfulness practices that I used with my own children. My daughter did illustrate that book, only she could because she knows her brother best. I’m proud to share that she and I have continued to collaborate and now have a series of Calm Cool Kids Educate books aimed to help both grown ups and kids learn the tools to be Calm & Cool. The work is for all of us. Because~ it takes A Calm Cool Adult to Help our children learn how to become Calm Cool Kids. This website is new and in the making. I hope you’ll be patient with me. I’m finding my place in this website world. Be Well and Stay Safe. With Gratitude and Deep Appreciation – Kellie

My Passion

I have a deep passion and heartfelt desire to help every child feel safe, connected, valued, seen, represented and loved. To accomplish this, I know that the adults who work with children in our schools, community spaces and provide for these youngsters in families also need to be fully equipped with all that one needs to provide well for children.  Understanding how essential our own emotional intelligence is to the development of a child’s social emotional learning is foundational to meeting this underlying need. So much of our adult lives are lived in a space of automaticity, striving to survive. Moving from one stressful situation to another, without a moment to reset, and restore ourselves.  I began to understand just how important this work was with my own children, and with my work as an SLP and mindfulness educator in private practice and schools. However, it wasn’t until I began to receive emails from my adult readers who had purchased Some Days I Flipped My Lid- for their children and grandchildren, expressing that they wished they had known about these resources when they were children. So it is. My passion is to provide emotional intelligence information, resource and support with mindfulness practices to educators, parents, and any adult who wishes to cultivate a deeper sense of Calm & Cool. It takes a Calm Brain to Calm a Brain. It Takes a Calm Body to Calm A Body. And It Takes A Calm Heart to Calm A Heart.

My Goals

My goals are many and I’m just getting started!! Hopefully soon, you’ll see more books in our Calm Cool Kids Educate Series, as well as blog posts, a Calm Cool Kids News Letter and more exciting news coming soon!!

I’ll never forget the precious 5 year old’s face when I entered his kindergarten classroom after he had just celebrated a Beautiful Whoopsie. Beyond excited doesn’t begin to describe him. ~ “Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Bailey!! Guess What I did this morning?” He was full of wonder and awe. I had just arrived for Mindful Friday. I remember not being able to even begin to guess what this sweet boy -(who was always eager to share something about his day with me a frog, some cool snack, a story about his baby sister) would say on that particular day. I know that I wasn’t prepared for what was to come that’s for sure!

“I JUST MADE A BEAUTIFUL WHOOPSIE!”

I looked at him… all wonder and fantastic enthusiasm and thought, “Well that’s just lovely as can be- what is a Beautiful Whoopsie?” He told me that it was a HUGE MISTAKE and he was SO EXCITED that he made it, because he got to be celebrated. I let that sink in for just a moment or two as I looked around at the smiling faces of his peers who were equally excited about this epic mess up. Wellsa, isn’t this something.

CELEBRATING A MISTAKE! I LOVE IT!!!!

This youngster wasn’t hiding in the corner or under a table, asking to see the nurse or in the restroom with a bellyache because he messed up in math center a few moment earlier. Nope, he was celebrating his mistake with his friends. And how did he know how to do this? His beautiful, loving, emotionally intelligent teacher – the one who cared more about the children she taught then the things she taught her children showed them that MISTAKES are things to be CELEBRATED.

WE ALL CAN LEARN A LITTLE SOMETHING FROM THIS

I don’t look at mistakes the same way anymore. How could I? I mean, I still need some perspective from time to time because let’s face it, old patterns of beating myself up for my messy life mishaps are hard to break ~ some days. But, I’d be a liar if I didn’t say that day changed something for me. I saw how children reframed mistakes inside of their own hearts and minds as things that could be celebrated and not things to be ashamed of, feared or worried about. I watched children CHOOSE calm and cool over dysregulation because a loving, regulated adult taught them that being “messy” and making a “Beautiful Whoopsie” was a thing to be OKAY with not to DREAD. So when I make a mistake I can choose to beat myself up or I can tell my inner child- I did my best in that moment. I’m still learning and I’m still growing and I can choose to celebrate my messy life moments and see them as great opportunities to learn, grow and do it differently next time, rather than an epic failure.

GRATEFUL FOR THE LESSONS

I’m grateful for the life lesson I received that day from a wide-eyed 5 year old boy and his beautiful and loving friends who were oh so eager to celebrate his mistake with Hoots and Fist Bumps and Tippy Toe Dances around the kindergarten classroom. I’m grateful for kindergarten teachers who take the time to teach self compassion so we can give compassion more freely to others. We all make mistakes some days. We are so much more than the sum total of those mistakes. They don’t define us and if we let them, they can help us all grow up to be who we’re meant to be in this world…. good humans, just doing our best to be good to one another.
